Thank You for Your Support

I support a number of bloggers and video creators through Patreon, an Internet support mechanism. I have even thought of setting up a Patreon account for this blog, but it seems antithetical to my stated purpose for maintaining this blog in the first place.

I had commented to the major archery organizations that when a coach is trained, they also get dropped like a hot rock. First you get a certification (my first was USAA Level 2) then <cricket, cricket> nothing. I proceeded to get a Level 3 certification and <cricket, cricket> nothing. And then I got a Level 4 certification and <cricket, cricket> nothing. I complained to the USAA Executive Director at the time that you cannot buy a bar of soap on the Internet without a follow-up offer to buy something else. I asked: “Where are the offers for additional trainings, DVDs, books, whistle lanyards, windbreakers, coaching bags, etc?” All of these would provide revenue for the organization and serve their coaching clients needs. The ED took copious notes and was very excited about the prospect and then <cricket, cricket> nothing. Subsequently, I offered to produce a coaching newsletter for them at no cost and . . . you guessed it <cricket, cricket> nothing. (I didn’t even get a formal reply.)

So, I could just continue to gripe about the lack of support for archery coaches or I could do something about it. So I started this blog. It is free. I even received feedback from one follower who said I was violating my own recommendation that archery coaches should get paid (like all of the other coaches). My response was that even lawyers do some pro bono work.

So, I will not be opening a Patreon account . . . but if you want to support his blog there is something you can do, and that is subscribe to Archery Focus magazine. AF is the only archery education magazine . . . on the planet apparently . . . and for the cost of a subscription, you get six new issues along with free access to all of the past issues of the magazine, which encompasses thousands of articles from the best target archers, bowhunters, and coaches. (Bowhunting is only addressed with regard to the bow, not the hunting. There are plenty of hunting magazines to cover everything there.)

If you are interested, just go to www.archeryfocus.com and check it out. There are a small number of sample articles for your inspection. Subscribing involves just a few clicks of your mouse (and, of course, a credit card).

Thanks for your support!

And if you are already a subscriber, you can help by setting a goal to convince two more people to subscribe. If you are a club officer we have an affiliate program whereby each new subscription you pass through to us results in your club receiving a fee, so you can be raising funds for your club also.

PS And you can help by sending me questions you want answers to . . . archery related, of course. :o)

  1. As a competitor and USA Archery Level 2 Instructor (I am a volunteer instructor only and mostly work with ages 50+ here), I love Archery Focus Magazine and have been a subscriber for a few years now. Good stuff. I agree about the major organizations not having much follow-up. The USA Archery annual symposium is very expensive as well but does offer some resources.

    • I agree. The expense is what kept me from going … that and a lack of communication over what would be happening at it. And why can’t there be smaller drive-in confabs all over the country? They have made some improvements (e.g. making L3 trainings available all over) but there is much more to be done.

Coach, thank you for generously sharing your knowledge and experience. I’m 68 and have hunted with a longbow for years (actually, decades!). After retiring, a friend got me interested in target archery and I have been competing in the senior games, barebow class. At your suggestion, I recently subscribed to Archery Focus. Your blog and Archery Forcus are an invaluable resource for all aspects of the sport. I look forward to the publication of Archery Drills.

    Best Regards,

    • Thank you for your kind words. And … I am always looking for new traditional authors. If you have something to share, something that you think will help make archers or coaches better, we want to publish that. If you think the writing process is daunting, we can walk you through that. (Most people actually write better than they think–when they stick to what they know!). If you are interested email me at ruis.steve@gmail.com and we can discuss it.
