Anybody?

I asked a question regarding a piece of advice I got from another blog “Want to hold your bow steadier? Shuffle your feet!” (see two posts back).

I asked if this were good advice.

Anybody?

  1. Hello Steve, teh best 2015 for you and all you love. Do you mean: shuffle your feet until you get the best feet position to achive your bow steadier ?

    • I included the blog post I had read, it is still there. The recommendation was to shuffle one’s feet after every shot.

It could be good advice if: 1) it is part of the shot routine to shuffle, but then get them back where they belong, 2) it can be an intentional method of refocusing or interrupting a bad thought cycle (for example, interrupting bad self talk after a bad shot). However, I think that in either case, getting the feet back into the proper position is an important part of the shuffle.

  3. For fun I sometimes stand on 1 foot while shooting. I find it forces me to concentrate on my balance and steadiness more, and this in turn (I believe) improves my regular practice. This is not a technique I give to students who are just learning archery however.

    • If you do give it a try, make sure you have a method of evaluation decided upon ahead of time and realize that anything you change works for a while (the Hawthorne Effect). The real test is it it continues to work. Let us know how it goes.

  5. Having gone to great pains to get the feet in an effective position in order to accheive a good alignment it is interesting that any archer would wish to move the feet between shots unless they were confident in getting them back to the original position before the next arrow. One of the elements in practice is to establish foot/body alignment, quite a number of sessions!
There must be dozens of ways to receive stress, physical (eg breathing) and mental (eg a trigger word). Might the concern of getting the feet back in position not add to the stress with some archers?

  6. Last paragraph should read ‘dozens of ways to RELIEVE stress’. Dang spell checks!

    • Ditto! (And the spell checks are mine. The computer only catches about 60% of spelling errors and I know that!)
